Number of Animals

I came across this article and graphic this morning. Number of animals killed for type of food eaten.

Basically, eating chicken kills the most animals. Then eggs, beef, and pork.

Apparently, the impetus for the article and graphic was a report by some scientist claiming that eating beef (i.e. cows) somehow killed fewer animals than eating a plant-based diet (grain, fruits, and vegetables). Got you scratching your head? Me too. Not sure how he thought that made sense...

Most people I know who eat meat don't look at me (vegan) and say that I kill more animals than they do as meateaters. So I'm not sure if I buy some of the commentary out there about how meateaters will go to any length to justify eating meat...

Climate Change Starts With Not Eating Meat

From a vegan.com post this morning, Livestock and Climate Change, a new report claims that the 2006 United Nations report, Livestock’s Long Shadow, underestimated the effects of farming animals for feed on global warming. Seriously underestimated.

Excerpt:
"Livestock are already well-known to contribute to GHG emissions. Livestock’s Long Shadow, the widely-cited 2006 report by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), estimates that 7,516 million metric tons per year of CO2 equivalents (CO2e), or 18 percent of annual worldwide GHG emissions, are attributable to cattle, buffalo, sheep, goats, camels, horses, pigs, and poultry. That amount would easily qualify livestock for a hard look indeed in the search for ways to address climate change. But our analysis shows that livestock and their byproducts actually account for at least 32,564 million tons of CO2e per year, or 51 percent of annual worldwide GHG emissions."

Wow -- 51%! Do your part for climate change (check out 350.org) and stop eating meat!!

If I could...

I would be a great mom, cook, bake, do everything. And I'd be a great attorney.
I feel like I'm being a bad mom because of my job. And my job tells me that I'm doing a bad job. So I'm being a bad mom for nothing. That's what it feels like today. It's a bad day.

Never ending all-nighters

You hope that once you're thirty, you're past the all-nighters of high school...and college...and law school...but then you realize that something's not right in your head because you're still pulling all-nighters, just without as much fun, and this has become a pattern in your life. Not a good pattern either. Who wants to be pulling all-nighters all her life?
